ALLM Reading Room

The Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum of Lincoln Memorial University houses one of the world's largest private collections of Lincoln and Civil War material. Located on LMU's main Harrogate, TN campus near the historic Cumberland Gap, the museum preserves important archival and library holdings in addition to its artifact collection, with especially extensive assemblages of Civil War-era imagery and music, rare books on Abraham Lincoln, and commemorative Lincoln ephemera. Onsite researchers are welcome to utilize the Dr. Robert L. Kincaid Endowed Research Center.

Archival highlights include:

  • Manuscripts from Lincoln’s presidency and legal career
  • Papers of Cassius Marcellus Clay, Kentucky politician and Lincoln’s minister to Russia
  • Papers of Gen. Oliver O. Howard, Civil War commander and head of the Freedmen’s Bureau
  • Papers of John L. Worden, commander of the USS Monitor
  • One of the world’s largest collections of Civil War sheet music
  • Letters of Sgt. Benjamin Trail, 28th United States Colored Troops
  • Miscellaneous manuscripts of prominent Civil War personalities: U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Ambrose Burnside, George McClellan, etc.
  • Rare books relating to Ohioans’ Civil War experiences from the library of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion

Lincoln Center Research Fellows

The Lincoln Center Research Fellowship supports advanced research for emerging scholars (graduate students and recent PhD graduates), senior academics, and public historians working on topics including Abraham Lincoln, leadership theories, and public policy making.  

To apply, please submit a 500-word project description (proposals should specify how the project will benefit from the use of ALLM collection and research library), CV, and 2 letters of recommendation. The Lincoln Center Research Fellowship Committee will invite selected applicants to interview (in-person/virtual).

Lincoln Research Fellows will be expected to make a public presentation on their research for the Abraham Lincoln Center for Leadership and Public Policy near the end of the fellowship and acknowledge the Lincoln Center in any publications, reports, or public presentations resulting from their research fellowship.
