Form 1098-T

The IRS Form 1098-T is a statement that colleges and universities are required to issue to students who paid "qualified educational expenses" in the preceding tax year.

FAQ

  •   Do I qualify for a Form 1098-T?

You qualify to receive Form 1098-T if you paid more than $600 in "qualified educational expenses" in the preceding tax year. Qualified expenses include tuition, any fees required for enrollment, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.

  •   Where can I find my Form 1098-T?

If you want to access your 1098-T electronically, you can opt-in via MyLMU. Under the "Self-Service Menu," select "WebAdvisor for Students" and then "Student Tax Information." Once you opt-in to receive forms electronically, all future documents will be delivered electronically, and a hard copy will not be provided unless requested. After graduation, keeping your LMU account active will be critical to receiving your final 1098-T form. Once your account has been archived, you cannot view your electronic documents.

If you want to receive your 1098-T in paper form, it will be mailed to your address on file but cannot be emailed or faxed. You may also pick up your form at the DAR-Whitford Hall building located at the Harrogate Campus. You will be required to show your student or government-issued ID.

  •   When will my Form 1098-T be processed?

Your 1098-T will be mailed or uploaded no later than January 31st annually.

  •   Why doesn't my Form 1098-T match the amount I paid for the year?

Your 1098-T form reports qualified charges based on the date they were applied to your student account. For example, if you pre-registered for the Spring semester in December 2022, those charges will be applied to your 2022 1098-T. Please note that there are times when tuition can be carried over to the following calendar year. Your 1098-T will only report payments of qualified tuition and fees.

The following are not qualified tuition and related expenses:

    • Amounts paid for any course or other education involving sports, games, or hobbies, unless the course or other education is part of the student’s degree program or is taken to acquire or improve job skills.
    • Charges for housing, food, insurance, medical expenses (including student health fees), transportation, and similar personal, living, or family expenses.
  •   Why didn't I receive a Form 1098-T?
    • You may not have incurred over $600 in qualified tuition during the calendar year.
    • Your payment may not have come out-of-pocket or from a qualified student loan.
    • You may not have supplied a valid U.S. Social Security Number. International students will be provided a 1098-T upon request (please note that we cannot produce a 1098-T from a closed year).
    • Your payments and charges may not be in the reportable tax year. This is specifically true for 4th year DCOM students. Due to the early start of the final spring semester, the charges and payments are from the previous tax year.
  •   Whom do I contact with questions regarding my Form 1098-T?

You may contact the Office of Student Financial Services at cashier@LMUnet.edu, 423.869.6336, or by visiting DAR-Whitford Hall on the Harrogate campus.
