LMU Reinstates AHSS Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Avery Hall

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) announces the reinstatement of the AHSS Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences, the region’s only peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to humanities and social sciences research.

The journal aims to provide a platform for scholarly discourse, publishing peer-reviewed research on various humanities-related topics, including English, history, psychology, political science, philosophy and criminal justice. Dr. Martin Sellers, dean of the Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, recognized the demand for a publication among LMU faculty and researchers in the Appalachian region.

"Our region has sorely lacked journalistic opportunities, locations to publish scholarship in the humanities and social sciences,” said Sellers. “The journal will right that, providing the nation an opportunity to publish in and study scholarship through and around the Appalachian region, across the US and the world."

Distinguishing itself as LMU’s only peer-reviewed journal, this initiative provides a significant opportunity for academics in the region to publish their work. The editorial board consists of distinguished scholars from various fields, including Sellers, Dr. Stephanie Holyfield in history, Dr. Lee Gilroy in psychology, Dr. Kevin Jennings in criminal justice, Dr. Benjamin Mabry in political science, Dr. Steven Cowan in philosophy, Dr. James Charles in criminal justice, Dr. Abigail Heiniger in English and Dr. Maryanne Thrush in criminal justice.

The journal primarily targets faculty and researchers, with the first round of submissions focused on humanities research articles. Submissions will be accepted from March 1 through June 1.

“The editorial board and I are thrilled to restart this journal and help give a platform to some of the brightest academic minds in America today. This journal is something truly unique and will be a point of pride for years to come,” said Patrick Wensink, assistant professor of English and director of the Mountain Heritage Literary Festival and Appalachian Reading Series, who is serving as the journal editor-in-chief.

Wensink teaches fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, children’s book writing, literary magazine publication and composition. He is the bestselling author of several books, including Fake Fruit Factory, which was named a best book of 2015 by NPR. His nonfiction has appeared in The New York Times, Esquire, Oxford American and other publications.

The journal will contribute to LMU’s academic community and beyond by fostering cutting-edge research and dialogue in the humanities and social sciences. Guidelines and submission details can be found at https://digitalcommons.lmunet.edu/lmujoss/.
