Four students from the Lincoln Memorial University-Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) have been awarded the highly competitive Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) scholarship through the United States Army Veterinary Corps.
The recipients—Kirsten Langa, Abigail Witmer, Logan Lang, and Renee Hartzog, all members of the Class of 2028—are among an elite group of veterinary students selected for this prestigious award. Approximately 40 students received the scholarship across the nation this year out of 80-90 applicants, with LMU-CVM achieving a 100% acceptance rate—far surpassing the national average of less than 50%.
The Army HPSP scholarship covers full tuition and fees for veterinary students in exchange for a commitment to serve in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps after graduation. Scholarship recipients are selected based on academic achievement, leadership, physical and moral standing, and a strong dedication to service.
Dr. Cortney Curtis, a faculty member at LMU-CVM and a veteran herself, expressed her pride in the students' achievement.
“I’m incredibly proud of these four outstanding students who have earned the HPSP Army Veterinary Corps scholarship,” Curtis said. “Each has demonstrated exceptional dedication, hard work, and a deep commitment to service. Many have strong military roots, and some are currently serving or are veterans who have already given so much to our country. Their decision to continue serving as future Army veterinarians is truly inspiring, and I have no doubt they will make a lasting impact. Congratulations to these well-deserving students—our nation and the animals we protect are in great hands!”
LMU-CVM has a strong military connection, with several faculty members who are veterans or former military personnel, including Curtis. Their experience and mentorship played a key role in preparing students for the competitive selection process.
The Army HPSP is the only military branch offering this scholarship to veterinary students, and LMU-CVM’s students have consistently excelled in earning placements. The program provides tuition coverage, a monthly stipend, and financial assistance for books and equipment, ensuring students can focus on their veterinary education while preparing for careers in military veterinary medicine.
