During the Fall Commencement ceremony Dec. 14, Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts degree to Cynthia L. Whitt, a distinguished leader and LMU alumna.
Whitt has dedicated 37 years to LMU, leaving an indelible mark on the institution through her leadership, vision, and steadfast commitment to its mission. Since joining LMU in 1987 and becoming a member of the President’s Cabinet in 1991, she has been instrumental in driving the University’s growth and success, particularly in the areas of fundraising, marketing, and public relations.
Under Whitt’s leadership, LMU conducted three successful capital campaigns, collectively raising over $91 million in fundraising revenue. Her innovative work in fundraising strategy, particularly her pioneering efforts with multivariable testing in collaboration with alumnus Dr. Charles Holland and Dr. Frank Woodward, earned national recognition and set a benchmark for philanthropy in higher education.
Whitt holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Education in Educational Administration and Supervision from LMU. Beyond her professional achievements, she has made lasting contributions to the LMU community as the advisor and co-founder of LMU Women of Service, whose annual award now bears her name.
Whitt’s numerous accolades include her induction into the LMU Professional Hall of Fame and recognition for her extraordinary contributions to LMU and the broader community.
