Shell Receives TAS Distinguished Teacher Award

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions Department of Chemistry and Physics Associate Professor Thomas Shell has been named the 2024 Distinguished College/University Teacher Award by the Tennessee Academy of Science (TAS).

 

The award was presented at the 134th Annual Meeting of TAS, hosted on the LMU campus on Nov. 23.

 

The TAS Distinguished Teacher Award recognizes excellence in undergraduate and graduate instruction, mentorship, and contributions to student success in science education. Shell’s dedication to teaching, research, and mentorship has left a lasting impact on his students and the LMU academic community.

 

“Dr. Shell exemplifies the highest standards of teaching and scholarship,” said Dr. Adam Rollins, dean of the LMU College of Mathematics, Sciences, and Health Professions. “His ability to inspire and guide students in both classroom and research settings is a cornerstone of LMU’s commitment to academic excellence.”

 

Shell has been a member of LMU’s faculty since August 2021 and has earned a reputation for his innovative teaching techniques and his commitment to student success. Many of his students achieved high honors at the TAS annual meeting, including multiple first-place awards in chemistry research presentations and posters. His mentorship fosters not only academic achievement but also a lifelong passion for science and discovery.

In addition to his outstanding teaching, Shell has contributed significantly to research in organic and medicinal chemistry, focusing on the synthesis and characterization of biologically relevant molecules. His work has been widely recognized in scientific communities, further enhancing LMU’s reputation as a hub for academic and research excellence.

 

The Tennessee Academy of Science has been a champion of science education, research, and outreach in the state for more than a century, making this award a testament to Dr. Shell’s exemplary contributions to science education.
