For Terri Hamilton, a third-year student at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), being a first-generation college student represents more than personal achievement; it’s a collective journey of hope and determination shared with her family. A double major in English and History from Pennington Gap, Virginia, Hamilton is navigating the complexities of college life as the first in her family to pursue higher education, a journey she describes as a shared accomplishment.
“Being a first-generation college student means hope for a better future for myself and my family,” Hamilton said. “My family is incredibly supportive and proud of everything I’ve achieved. I couldn’t do this without them—they’re my greatest blessing.”
Hamilton’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Like many first-generation students, she initially struggled to understand the nuances of college life. With no family members to guide her through these unfamiliar waters, she turned to the supportive community at LMU for help.
“When I first started, I was overwhelmed and didn’t understand how anything worked. I couldn’t go directly to a family member because they were as unsure as I was,” Hamilton said. “I overcame those challenges by reaching out to my mentors and campus organizations. The faculty and staff at LMU are incredible—they’ve helped me navigate college every step of the way.” Hamilton has even channeled this experience into action by starting a club dedicated to supporting first-generation students like herself.
Hamilton’s time at LMU has been marked by memorable experiences, especially as a Lincoln Ambassador. Among her favorite memories is attending the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop (SROW), a conference for orientation leaders.
“SROW is an incredibly high-energy conference where we share ideas on improving the first-year student experience,” Hamilton explained. “It’s fun and interactive. I’ve met wonderful students from other schools, and we’ve stayed in touch. It’s definitely one of my favorite memories here at LMU.”
Hamilton credits Student Support Services as one of her most valuable resources on campus, helping her gain crucial academic and financial skills. But her support network also extends to her friends, who have been by her side as she learns to navigate the college experience.
Staying motivated through the ups and downs of college life can be tough, but Hamilton finds inspiration in her family, especially her young niece. “Since my niece was born, she’s been my biggest motivation. I want her to see that this is an attainable goal, that she can achieve anything she sets her mind to,” Hamilton shared.
For Hamilton, her parents are a constant source of strength and inspiration. “My mom and dad are the strongest and kindest people I know. They didn’t finish college as traditional students, but they’ve always pushed me to reach my goals. I couldn’t do this without them,” she said.
Looking to the future, Hamilton plans to continue her education in Higher Education or Student Affairs. Her goal is to support other students, especially first-generation students, in earning their degrees.
As she reflects on her journey, Hamilton offers heartfelt advice to other first-generation students beginning their college careers: “Get involved. Join a club, attend events, or spend time with your roommate. Finding a place to belong on campus helps you feel supported. And don’t ever be afraid to ask for help—people are here and willing to help you.”
