LMU-Doctor of Physical Therapy Hosts Annual Research Symposium

The Lincoln Memorial University-Doctor of Physical Therapy (LMU-DPT) program held its annual Research Symposium on Nov. 20 at LMU-Knoxville. The event highlighted the work of students and faculty, underscoring LMU’s commitment to advancing the field of physical therapy through research and education.

The symposium featured capstone presentations by LMU-DPT students on topics ranging from pelvic health physical therapy to innovative interventions for pediatric and athletic populations. These presentations reflected months of rigorous study and hands-on collaboration between students and faculty mentors.

“This symposium is an opportunity for our students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they’ve gained throughout their studies while contributing to the broader body of evidence-based physical therapy practice,” said Associate Professor and Director of Research and Faculty Development Lawrence Ramiscal.

The day concluded with the recognition of the top three presentations, selected by a panel of judges:

1. First Place: Nora Miodrag and Breeana Hickey for their presentation, “Relationship Between Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Exercise in Postpartum Women.”
2. Second Place: Gabrielle Otremba and Braden Beckham for their presentation, “Tech-Assisted Physical Therapy Improves Outcomes in Pediatric SMA Types I/II: A Case Series.”
3. Third Place: Collin Stricklin, Kyle Lanphere, and Jonah Smith for their presentation, “Directional Preference vs. Non-Directional Physical Therapy Approach in Managing Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: A Multi-Center Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol.”

The symposium was attended by approximately 150 participants, including LMU faculty, clinical partners, and members of the Knoxville health care community. The judges praised the students’ growing expertise and emphasized the program's increasing quality.
