Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine (LMU-CDM) Assistant Professor Ehsanul Hoque Apu, B.D.S., M.Sc., Ph.D., authored a significant research paper recently published in Bioactive Materials journal. This research explores innovative approaches to improve the use of composite biomaterials in bone, cartilage, and dental regenerative medicine. This is a collaborative effort between Michigan State University, Johns Hopkins University and University of Michigan.
The study focuses on composite biomaterials comprising polylactide (PLA) and hydroxyapatite (HA), materials widely used for their osteoconductive properties in tissue regeneration. However, adverse immune responses following surgical implantation have posed a challenge. These immune reactions are linked to the size and shape of HA particles, but effective strategies to modulate such responses have remained elusive.
“This research marks an advancement in tissue engineering by demonstrating the potential of immunometabolism modulation to foster a pro-regenerative microenvironment,” said Hoque Apu. “The ability to control the inflammatory response to biomaterials could revolutionize regenerative medicine and improve patient outcomes in dental and orthopedic surgery.”
Bioactive Materials is an international, peer-reviewed research publication covering all aspects of bioactive materials. The journal welcomes the submission of research papers, reviews and rapid communications concerned with the science and engineering of next-generation biomaterials that encounter cells, tissues or organs across all living species. Bioactive Materials journal has an impact factor of 18.
