Jerry and Michele Burnette Establish Scholarship to Support First-Time Freshmen

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Trustee Jerry Burnette and his wife Michele have generously donated a scholarship to help first-time freshmen bridge the financial gap and achieve their dreams of attending LMU. The Jerry and Michele Burnette Scholarship is designated for students who demonstrate financial need and have a strong desire to pursue their education at LMU.

The scholarship will be administered by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, with funds allocated to assist students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those from Appalachia. The Burnettes’ contribution is intended to serve as a “bridge” and help cover the “last mile” of financial need for students who might not otherwise be able to attend LMU.

As LMU graduates, Jerry (1986) and Michele (1987), both know the impact that Railsplitter alumni can make. The Burnettes hope their donation will inspire fellow alumni and other supporters to establish similar scholarships, furthering LMU's mission to provide affordable, quality education to students from Appalachia and beyond.

“This scholarship is intended to be more than just a one-time donation,” Jerry Burnette said. “Our hope is that it will serve as a spark, encouraging others to join in supporting the next generation of LMU students, helping them succeed academically and beyond.”

LMU plans to follow the scholarship recipients throughout their academic journey, providing guidance and support as they work toward their degrees. The university’s goal is to ensure that financial need does not prevent students from realizing their full potential.

“Jerry and Michele Burnette’s investment in students will bridge the gap between the dream of becoming an LMU student and the reality of achieving that goal,” said Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Lindsay D. Haywood, DBA. “This scholarship will alleviate some of the financial burdens students face when making their post-secondary decision. Our hope is that these students, once alumni, will be inspired to make a difference like the Burnettes have.”
