The BA – EDSL program was designed as a licensure pathway for you to earn your K-5 Elementary Education initial teacher licensure, with English as a second language certification. At LMU, we even offer a BS – EDLL program, which will help to provide you with Elementary Education initial teacher licensure with an ESL concentration, but no full certification.

During your time in the program, you will receive top-notch, hands-on learning experiences both in class from our talented faculty and in the field from real world practice in K-5 classrooms. Our faculty members in the Education program have developed extensive experience as both classroom teachers and school administrators, ensuring that you receive the opportunity to learn practical lessons sure to be applicable in your own classroom. As a candidate for licensure in our program, we encourage you to make the most of the wide range of clinical and field experiences offered at LMU, working alongside real teachers in their own classrooms.

To ensure that you are eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Learning and English Language Learners program, please review the list of requirements below. To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:

Regular Admission to LMU

• High school graduate with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher on a 4-point grading scale. ACT/SAT Test Scores are optional. If test scores are sent to the Office of Admissions, they will be reviewed on an individual case.
• OR General Education Development (GED) examination with an average score of 45 or higher and no component score below 35

Program Requirements

To earn your bachelor's degree and teacher certification from LMU, you must meet certain benchmarks during your time in the program. In accordance with your specific education bachelor's degree pathway, you must meet or exceed the following criteria:

• Required scores on the ACT, SAT, or PRAXIS® CORE exam
• Required program interviews
• Educator Disposition Assessments
• Relevant course grades
• Required clinical experiences, placements, and documentation
• All PRAXIS II® required exams
• edTPA Assessment
• Cumulative college GPA of 2.75 or higher

Teacher Licensure Prerequisites & Co-requisites

Each teacher initial licensure degree program has its own unique suggested four-year plan with set curricula. However, some courses must be completed as prerequisites and co-requisites, such as:

• EDUC 290 – Prerequisite to all other professional education core courses. EDUC 210 can be taken before being enrolled in EDUC 290, but this is not recommended.
• EDUC 210 – Prerequisite to all professional education core courses except EDUC 290.
• SPED 320 – Prerequisite to EDUC 480.
• PSYC 221 – Prerequisite to EDUC 480.

As an Elementary Education major, the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies in Human Learning and English Language Learners is a pathway designed to help you earn your K-5 Elementary Education initial teacher licensure and add-on your English as a Second Language certification (which requires foreign language and a PRAXIS® exam). By earning the full-certification add-on endorsement, you will be qualified to teach English as a Second Language in your community, region and beyond!
