In the realm of veterinary medicine and technology, technicians work alongside veterinarians to help provide professional animal healthcare. These veterinary technicians possess extensive knowledge and training when it comes to the care and handling of animals, and are able to perform normal and abnormal life processes, medical and surgical nursing, anesthesiology, diagnostic imaging, and clinical laboratory procedures.
The skill and knowledge to perform those tasks and to get a job as a veterinary technician can be obtained while pursuing an Associate of Science in Veterinary Medical Technology (AS-VMT) degree from Lincoln Memorial University.
Our in-depth and high-quality 2.5-year veterinary medical technology program emphasizes hands-on learning experience with animals, preventative medicine and service to the community. You'll learn in small classes (typically fewer than 20 students), taught by doctors of veterinary medicine, licensed veterinary medical technicians and other highly credentialed professionals. Our state-of-the-art facility in Ewing, VA provides the perfect space to test practice your animal healthcare skills, while full-time internship opportunities during your final semester will give you the opportunity to put those skills to the test in real-life animal care environments.
If you're interested in beginning a career in animal healthcare or a veterinary practice, this associate's degree program is for you.
To qualify for the 2.5-year AS-VMT program, you must meet the following requirements:
To be accepted into the AS-VMT program, you must complete both the general LMU application and the VMTP application. Once completed, please submit your AS-VMT application materials to the Veterinary Medical Technology Program, not the University Admissions Office.
The AS-VMT application deadline for the spring semester is October 31st.
The Associate Degree in Veterinary Medical Technology curriculum will prepare you to take the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE), a must for work in this field or pursuing further education. Most of our AS-VMT graduates achieve above-average scores on the VTNE. Many choose to continue their education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Medical Technology. Graduates have even joined veterinary school teaching hospitals, major referral centers and several practices in their local community.
Veterinary technicians are in high demand, with at least four jobs available for every veterinary technology graduate. The U.S. Department of Labor projects a growth rate of 15% for technician careers from now until 2030. VMT graduates have gone on to successful careers in small and large animal clinics, veterinary education, veterinary practice management, exotic animal practices, research facilities, zoos and public health.
*Please note, the AS-VMT degree does NOT include the prerequisite coursework necessary to apply to veterinary school.
