LMU-DCOM to Host 2021 Virtual Opioid Education Symposium
Pain and Symptom Management in Palliative and Hospice Care
Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) will host the 2021 Virtual Opioid Education Symposium on Monday, April 19, from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The theme of this year’s symposium is Pain and Symptom Management: Striking a Balance with key takeaways for students, health care providers, community leaders, front line law enforcement and other service-oriented care providers. The symposium is open to the community and will be held completely online via Zoom.
“We are very excited about the Opioid Symposium presenter line up for students and community members this year,” said Dr. Sherry Jimenez, associate dean of Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Simulation at LMU-DCOM. “All are experts in palliative and hospice care and experienced with opioid prescribing and use for pain and symptom management.”
The symposium aims to help attendees understand the role of opioids as supplemental measures for symptom and end-of-life care and explain the different roles of interdisciplinary group members. The event will showcase clear case examples illustrating how to effectively collaborate as a member of the health care team to achieve optimal patient care and show how to recognize - from both clinical and holistic perspectives - the devastating factors contributing to opioid misuse regionally and nationally.
“In accordance with our theme, individuals from multiple professions will simulate interdisciplinary group meetings in palliative and hospice care environments to demonstrate what patient-centered collaborative care looks like,” Jimenez said. “They will then debrief with attendees on the roles each member plays in this dynamic.”
Attendance will include, but not be limited to, students from osteopathic medical education, physician assistant, family nurse practitioner, pharmacy and social work programs. All interested course directors, community leaders, community partners and other trained medical professionals are also invited to attend this free event.
