Sheri Schatz and Kevin Hinkle

Faculty and doctoral students from the Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) School of Business recently presented their research at the 54th annual Southeast Decision Science Institute (SEDSI) conference, held in Greenville, South Carolina. Their contributions focused on data analytics, artificial intelligence and administrative efficiency in higher education.

Dr. Cheryl Hild, assistant professor, presented “Analytical Thinking in Our Current Environment,” addressing the evolving role of data, analytics and statistics instruction. Her presentation emphasized the importance of data literacy across disciplines, particularly in an era dominated by big data and generative artificial intelligence. Hild discussed strategies to enhance analytical thinking skills through learning models such as problem-based learning, context-based learning and guided inquiry, equipping students with critical decision-making tools for a rapidly changing digital landscape.

Dr. Joshua Ray, associate professor, and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) students Kevin Hinkle and Sheri Schatz presented “Integrating Lean Principles and Higher Education Administration with the Support of Artificial Intelligence.” Their research examined how lean principles, commonly used in industry, can enhance efficiency and sustainability within higher education administration. The team explored AI-driven applications for streamlining operations, optimizing resources and improving student experience. Their study compared AI-generated recommendations with their expertise, highlighting opportunities for higher education institutions to integrate AI-driven decision-making into administrative practices.

“The LMU School of Business is dedicated to advancing research that informs and improves business practices,” said Dr. Kelsey Metz, dean of the School of Business. “Our faculty and doctoral students’ contributions at SEDSI highlight the growing role of data analytics, artificial intelligence, and operational efficiency in higher education and beyond.”
