The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences will host saxophonist Tod Dickow and the jazz trio Charged Particles for a tribute to legendary saxophonist Michael Brecker on Thursday, January 23, at 7 p.m. in the Sam and Sue Mars Performing Arts Center at the Duke Hall of Citizenship. The performance is free and open to the public.
Brecker, a 15-time Grammy winner, was a pioneering tenor saxophonist who collaborated with Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, and Eric Clapton. His blend of jazz, rock, and world music set new standards in contemporary jazz.
Dickow, known for his dynamic saxophone performances, has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Jackie & Roy, Harry Connick Jr., Steve Allen, Terry Gibbs, Frank Sinatra Jr., and Dave Brubeck. He joins Charged Particles to perform selections from Brecker’s career, combining high-energy improvisation with stories behind the music.
Based in San Francisco’s Bay Area, Charged Particles is in its third decade playing funky Latin jazz. The band has toured Indonesia, Canada, England, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates and performs about 170 concerts annually across the U.S. DownBeat Magazine called the band “something special” and “inventive, invigorating, mesmerizing, beautiful, virtuosic, and lyrical,” while Jazz Times described them as “enormously talented.”
Charged Particles features keyboardist Murray Low, known for his dazzling Latin-jazz technique and imaginative improvisation; bassist Aaron Germain recognized for his inventive and sophisticated bass playing; and drummer Jon Krosnick. Together, they deliver some of the most electrifying jazz in the country.
