Symposium on Special Education Set for September 28

Dr. John McCook

The Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) will host the Carter and Moyers School of Education Symposium on Special Education September 28 at the Cedar Bluff Campus. This event, designed to engage educators, administrators, parents, and advocates, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The symposium will feature a variety of sessions, including a keynote presentation and multiple breakout sessions focusing on critical topics in special education. Attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, the legal aspects of special education, and more.

The symposium will open with a keynote presentation by Associate Professor and Assistant Dean John McCook, EdD. The session will introduce participants to the role of special education through a mock IEP meeting, followed by an interactive question and answer session. This presentation is aimed at general and special education teachers, teacher candidates, administrators, parents, and advocates.

Participants can choose from a range of breakout sessions tailored to various aspects of special education. These sessions will cover topics such as 504 plans and Tennessee's Dyslexia Law, the steps of IEP development, discipline procedures for students with IEPs, progress monitoring, data collection, and more. LMU faculty and guest speakers from the Tennessee Department of Education, Knox County Schools, and other educational institutions will lead the sessions.

There is no cost to attend the symposium, but registration is required. Due to limited space, participation is capped at 120 attendees. Those interested in attending are encouraged to register early to secure their spot. Event registration can be found at https://www.lmunet.edu/school-of-education/symposium-on-special-education/.
