Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine (LMU-CDM) Celebrates Student Research Publication on Oral Health and Microbiome

Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine (LMU-CDM) announces that Molly Anderson, a third-year doctor of medicine in dentistry (DMD) student, has achieved a significant academic milestone with the publication of her research paper titled "Akkermansia Muciniphila as a Potential Guardian Against Oral Health Diseases: A Narrative Review." This achievement underscores Anderson’s commitment to advancing knowledge in oral health and microbiology, as well as her passion for contributing to the field of dental medicine.

In her paper, Molly explores the critical role of the oral microbiome in periodontal disease (PD) and the distinct functions of two prominent bacterial species. Porphyromonas gingivalis is well-known for its pathogenic role, contributing to inflammation and immune system evasion. In contrast, Akkermansia muciniphila is examined for its potential protective qualities. Anderson’s review delves into the ways Akkermansia muciniphila may help reduce inflammation, bolster immune responses, and mitigate PD, alongside related systemic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Anderson’s research was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Modar Kassan, LMU-CDM chair of biomedical sciences and associate professor of physiology, and Dr. Ammaar Abidi, LMU-CDM associate dean of research, both of whom played pivotal roles in shaping the direction of the paper. Additionally, the contributions of co-authors Dr. Karima Ait-Aissa, LMU-CDM director for research and assistant professor of biomedical sciences, and Dr. Amal Sahyoun, LMU-CDM assistant professor of biomedical science, were instrumental in enhancing the review’s scientific rigor.

“We are incredibly proud of Molly’s accomplishment,” said Kassan. “Her research adds valuable insight into the anti-inflammatory potential of Akkermansia muciniphila in both oral health and broader systemic conditions, and it’s a testament to her dedication and passion for advancing oral health knowledge.”

The entire LMU-CDM community celebrates Anderson's hard work and the collaborative effort of the research team, which has made a meaningful contribution to understanding how the microbiome can influence not just oral health but overall well-being.
