A new report in the Journal for Applied Business and Economics (JABE) by researchers at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) provides valuable insight into the work ethic of information technology (IT) professionals, a critical component of organizational performance in today’s technology-driven environment.

Dr. Debra Moyers, along with co-authors Dr. Cheryl Hild, Dr. Kelsey Metz, and Dr. Joshua Ray, was accepted for publication in JABE for their study, titled “An Exploration of the Contemporary Work Ethic of IT Industry Employees in the United States.”

This research contributes significantly to the growing body of literature on work ethic by examining its stability over time and across different demographic categories within the U.S. IT sector. The study also explores the influence of organizational culture on work ethics, offering crucial findings that are highly relevant to IT professionals and organizations alike.

The study was designed to achieve multiple objectives, including investigating the current level of work ethic among employees in the U.S. IT industry and comparing post-pandemic levels of work ethic in the U.S. IT sector to those observed in a pre-pandemic sample of multi-industry U.S. employees.

Additionally, it examined work ethic across various work settings and IT occupational categories, while also analyzing the impact of demographic, job role and cultural factors on the work ethic of U.S. IT employees. The results of the study suggest that work ethic remains relatively stable over time and across various demographic groups. Moreover, the research highlights important relationships between work ethic and organizational culture, underlining the relevance of these findings for the IT profession.
