LMU-CVM CatSnip Continues Feral Cat Control Initiative

Catsnip surgery

The Lincoln Memorial University-Richard A. Gillespie College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) held its annual CatSnip Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) event in April, continuing its commitment to animal welfare and service to the Appalachian region.

Under the LMU-CVM Shelter Medicine Club (SMC) coordination, student and staff volunteers targeted feral cat populations in Lee County, Virginia, and Claiborne County, Tennessee. Nineteen community cats were trapped at three designated locations and brought in for care. Of these, 16 cats underwent spay or neuter surgeries, two were found to be already altered, and one cat was deemed unsuitable for surgery.  Basic medical care, including wound treatment, flea/tick prevention, and vaccinations, was administered to all cats.

Supported by a grant from Two Mauds, Inc. that was secured by Kathleen Thomas, Director of CVM Graduate Programs, this event is part of a series of targeted TNR projects for the Cumberland Gap region. Additional initiatives are scheduled throughout May, late summer and early fall, focusing on specific colonies of outdoor cats with the aim of neutering, vaccinating, and releasing over 75% of each colony.

TNR projects are vital in reducing the feral cat population and allocating resources for rescues and shelters to assist homeless animals. Spayed and neutered outdoor cats experience improved health and behavior, including reduced instances of fighting, diseases, and roaming.
