McConnell Published in "American Journal of Management"

Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) Interim President Jason McConnell, DBA, has authored a research paper which has been accepted for publication in the “American Journal of Management” (Vol. 24 No. 1 [2024]). LMU School of Business Dean Kelsey Metz, PhD, served as second author on the paper and assisted with the research.

The article entitled, “Finding Fulfillment: An Examination of the Fulfillment of Maslow’s Needs Among Traditional, Remote, and Hybrid-Setting Employees,” explores the effects of workplace arrangement on employees’ satisfaction with Maslow’s five fundamental human needs. The study sought to determine if traditional, remote, or hybrid work settings influence employees’ attainment of physiological needs, safety-security needs, belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs.

The study uncovered that hybrid employees have statistically greater levels of satisfaction with each of the five needs categories when compared to traditional and remote-setting employees. Further, the study found that traditional and remote employees do not differ in their displayed levels of physiological needs, safety-security needs, belonging needs, and esteem needs. The results affirm the benefits of hybrid employment, which is likely attributed to heightened workplace flexibility compounded with the maintenance of in-person collaboration and social contact.

McConnell and Metz plan to extend their research by examining the benefits of hybrid employment as relevant to the organization and the employee. Further, they seek to examine various key performance indicators against traditional, remote, and hybrid work setting environments.

The American Journal of Management (AJM) is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing scholarly empirical and theoretical research articles focusing on improving business and management theory, practice and behavior. AJM encourages research that impacts the general business and management fields as a whole and introduces new ideas or new perspectives on existing research.
