The Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine (LMU-DCOM) hosted a White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2024 on April 30 at Tex Turner Arena on the main campus in Harrogate. The ceremony featured 387 students who began in August 2020 at Harrogate and LMU-Knoxville.
Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Covenant Health Mark Browne, MD, MMM, FACPE, CPE, was the keynote speaker.
“The core of what we do is not simply to diagnose and treat,” Browne said. “The core of what we do . . . is to listen, to communicate, and to translate very complex messages for your patients in ways they can truly understand. When we unplug in medicine, when we do walk away from our devices, from our computer screens, from our technology, for just a moment, to hold a patient’s hand, to look them directly in the eye, maybe even cry a little with them, it’s in that moment that . . . we become more than just repositories for information and diagnostics. We/you become physicians.”
The ceremony also featured the welcome from Dr. Christopher J. Loyke, LMU-DCOM dean and chief academic officer; student greetings from Michael Helou, Class of 2024; introduction of keynote speaker from Connor Brown, Class of 2024; and the osteopathic pledge led by Dr. Anya Cope.
Faculty members who coated the students on stage during the ceremony were Jeffrey Chesnut, DO; Anya Cope, DO, FACOI, Gina M. DeFranco, DO; Teana Moore, DO; Chris Yonts, DO; and Jan D. Zieren, DO, MPH, FACOFP dist.
