Academic grids are a very astheticly pleaseing way to provide links to different poritons of your website. An academic grid can be used in many different ways; the most common use for an acadmeic grid, however, is as a link tree. Think of the academic grid as a directory you can use to highlight the important or most used pages on your site.
It is important to note that the academic gird is pre-designed to fit exactly 5 squares across when using the recommended image size. This means if you do not use at least 5 squares, or you do not use them in intervals of 5, you will be left with blank space depending on how many square you are missing to finish that row. For example, look at the LMU hompepage (www.lmunet.edu) . We are having a similar issue with the academic grid there.
