    Summary:

    ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance, previously known as Humane Alliance, focuses on the training of high-quality, high-volume, and low-cost companion animal sterilization. Starting in 1994 as a small spay/neuter clinic in Asheville, NC, Humane Alliance grew into a nonprofit organization nationally recognized for fostering a mentoring culture across the country to successfully replicate its tried and tested clinic model. In 2015 Humane Alliance merged with the ASPCA, thus allowing us even greater exposure and resources to expand our programs. In 2019, we sterilized over 25,000 dogs and cats in western North Carolina alone.

    The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting veterinarians and veterinary assistants with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, general cleaning, and (in consult with veterinarians) the flow of animals through the clinic. Additionally, this position is responsible for training students and staff to use Spay/Neuter Alliance patient care protocols and procedures. In addition, RVTs are expected to demonstrate leadership and excellent communication skills in order to plan, execute and facilitate the daily needs of operations, staff and patients. This position reports to the Director, Medical Support Staff.

    Responsibilities:

    Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

    Leadership & Training: (35%)
    Train veterinary assistants, new staff members, and trainees on Spay/Neuter Alliance patient care protocols and procedures
    Behave in a manner that supports our Core Values and upholds both personal and professional standards at all times, acting as leader and positive support for all members
    Demonstrate and teach low-stress animal handling techniques
    Communicate effectively and professionally with students, public, trainees, and all ASPCA staff members
    Represent the ASPCA in a professional and courteous manner at all times

    Patient Care: (35%)
    Efficiently pre-medicate, induce and intubate patients as necessary
    Administer injections, medications, treatments and supportive care measures as directed by Spay/Neuter Alliance staff and attending veterinarians
    Must have clear knowledge and understanding of anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales and other monitoring equipment including basic functionality and ability to troubleshoot
    Glove in sterilely and assist veterinarian with surgery when appropriate
    Monitor anesthesia and identify any abnormal conditions
    Care for upwards of 35-50 cats and dogs per day
    Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in preoperative, operative and postoperative phases
    Prep patients for surgery observing all clinic procedures to assure sterility and safety of patients and follow the highest standards of care
    Perform daily care of surgical patients, assisting veterinarians and veterinary assistants with surgical and anesthetic procedures
    Daily Operations & Communication: (30%)
    Perform general duties in the operating room during surgery, assisting with movement of patients, recovery of patients, and general flow
    Handle patient intake and release, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner
    Communicate effectively with all members of the surgical team
    Fill the role of veterinary assistant as needed
    Daily cleaning of kennels, carriers and patient rooms to ensure cleanliness of the facility by following disease control protocols and maintain patient comfort
    Respond appropriately to an emergency, take direction from a veterinarian and direct others during the event
    Maintain competency in CPR procedures
    Handle medical calls appropriately and promptly
    Ensure everyday adherence to prompt and accurate paperwork procedures
    Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures
    Handle and track controlled substances for large volumes of surgical patients, maintaining all necessary drug logs and patient records
    Efficiently run a surgical team and maintain flow for both clinic and training teams
    Communicate regularly with clients to provide additional support including obtaining high risk waivers, communicating no-surgery decisions and deliver special patient care instructions as needed
    Use proprietary database for all patient care when necessary
    Maintain high competency in drug calculations and drawing accurate drug dosages
    Knowledge of, and possible participation in, all Spay/Neuter Alliance programs
    Ensure cleanliness of the facility by following disease control protocols
