The Sport and Exercise Science Department provides students with an understanding of the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological effects of exercise on the human body. The Department offers three majors, each designed to prepare students for a wide range of careers in fast-growing fields of wellness, and fitness.

 

Degrees Offered

The Sport and Exercise Science Department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in:

Both the general and the pre-professional Exercise Science degrees will prepare students to enter the field of Exercise Science. However, the degree options differ in terms of students' preparation for post-degree programs. Students that plan to attend professional school, such as occupational therapy, should enroll in the General Exercise Science - Pre OTD degree program. Students who plan to enroll in physical therapy, should enroll in the Exercise and Rehabilitation Science at the School of Allied Health Science. The General Exercise Science will prepare students for a wide range of careers in fields of wellness and fitness. Students may choose from concentrations offered in the department or take elective courses required for application to PA programs, chiropractic programs, or graduate studies in exercise physiology.

Concentrations

The Department also offers concentrations in Health, Sport Therapy, and Sport Coaching.

The General Exercise Science degree can also be tailored for students to complete the requirements for Physical Assistant Programs.

 

Sports Coaching Concentration

Bring your passions for exercise, sports, leadership and teamwork together with a concentration in Sports Coaching when you complete the bachelor's program.

Sports Therapy Concentration

Focusing on the therapeutic aspect of sports and exercise sciences, learn how to guide athletes through rehabilitation and various sports therapies.

Our Exercise and Sports Science Bachelors Degree program offers a standard Health Concentration, which will prepare you for generalized roles in health care and health administration.

General Exercise Science Pre OTD

This major is for students interested in applying to Occupational Therapy School

The General Exercise Science major has 3 pathways to Occupational Therapy. 

  1. 3+3 that results in a B.S. General Exercise Science and an OTD. (Internal to LMU undergraduate students only via the GPA Program)
  2. 3+3 that results in only an OTD
  3. Direct entry (traditional admission pathway)

Pathway 1

Guaranteed Professional Admission (GPA) Program

The LMU Guaranteed Professional Admission (GPA Program) is a unique program of Lincoln Memorial University that allows high-achieving, highly motivated high school seniors to earn guaranteed acceptance into one of our professional degree pathways upon successful completion of their Undergraduate degree at LMU. Each professional program has slightly different benchmarks and requirements along the way but is committed to offering successful GPA program participants a head start on their professional education.

The general exercise pre-OTD degree offer incoming freshmen that meet academic qualifications an opportunity 3+3 direct entry pathways to LMU Doctor of Occupational Therapy.

The requirements for this program are outlined below.

  1. High school graduate with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale. 
  2. Minimum Math (21) ACT score or minimum Math SAT score of 530.
  3. Students will be required to answer an occupational therapy-focused writing prompt/personal statement.
  4. Two (2) character references from (choose 2 of the following)
  • Guidance counselor/humanities teacher 
  • Science Teacher 
  • Coach
  • Employer

Freshmen admitted as BS/OTD students will be granted acceptance into the OTD program upon satisfactory completion of the above requirements. Full acceptance will be granted pending satisfactory completion of the criteria for progression to the Professional OTD Program. Students must also complete LMU's general education core curriculum requirements in addition to the BS requirements to earn a baccalaureate degree in General Exercise at the end of the first year of the OTD program.

 Guaranteed Professional Admission (GPA) Program Supplemental Application

Pathway 2

  • Entry with 90+ hours (3+3)- Students who have performed exceptionally well during their first 90 undergraduate hours. This student demonstrates the ability to complete the OTD degree without holding a bachelor's degree.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT CHECKLIST:

Do you have a minimum of 90 semester hours of college coursework completed? If no, will 90 hours be completed before anticipated enrollment in the OT program?

3.0 overall GPA on all college coursework.

2.8 overall GPA on all college math/science coursework.

Minimum of 40 hours of shadowing occupational therapists.

NOTE: Substitution of requirement for any of the above prerequisite courses may be granted by the occupational therapy program admissions committee on an individual basis.
