Lincoln Memorial University-College of Dental Medicine (LMU-CDM) Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences Ehsanul Hoque Apu, DDS. M.Sc., Ph.D., led a collaborative team of scientists to conduct research and authored a review article which was accepted and published in the Biomedicines Journal. This work has been completed by a collaborative effort with Michigan State University (USA), University of Toronto (Canada) and University of Oulu (Finland).
The Biomedicines Journal is the leading peer-reviewed journal dedicated to all aspects of research on human health and disease, the discovery and characterization of new therapeutic targets, therapeutic strategies, and research of naturally driven biomedicines, pharmaceuticals, and biopharmaceutical products. The journal has an impact factor (IF) of 4.7 which puts it among the leading journals in the field.
“Ionic Liquids (ILs) are very dynamic materials with applications in numerous scientific fields,” said Hoque Apu. “Although very few groups have reported the potential role of ILs in biomedical applications, none have highlighted their role in dental clinics and craniofacial research.”
This comprehensive review is a pioneering study on functionalities and applications of ILs in dentistry such as coating for dental implants and dental cement formulation, as well as craniofacial engineering.
The study explored on wider fields of dental applications and reported that Ionic liquids (ILs) have a unique multifunctional property that might allow researchers to explore the potentiality of remote sensing and controlling cellular growth in the craniofacial region. As they are antimicrobial and easy to characterize, they will enhance the functional properties of dental cements, 3D bioprinting, and dental implants with smart sensing capabilities.
